arrow icon Dear Sir, I am doing MA Economics 1sy Year. I want to know the best Universities/Institutes for doing PHD. Economics. If JRF is cleared where can an individual apply? Also please guide about the career options other than teaching, after doing PHD.

Delhi School of Economics, Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, some of the Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Statistical Institute, University of Pune Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics, Pune etc would be among the prominent universities/ institutions for doing PhD in Economics. You would have to apply for admission on the basis of an admission test which could be the UGC NET for JRF (www.ugc.ac.in). Economics doctorates may join consulting, research and advisory positions, work for the government, in business and financial journalism in financial and credit rating agencies and in commercial banks, the apex financial institutions such as the Reserve Bank of India (www.rbi.org.in), IDBI, NABARD, SEBI and others. The Indian Economic Service examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (www.upsc.gov.in) is open to postgraduates in economics. Indicative examples.(27.11.2008)

arrow icon can you please tell me about government affiliated colleges & universities through distance mode in India in B.A. Finance?

You may visit www.dec.ac.in for the list of universities/ institutions recognised by the Distance Education Council and the website www.ignou.ac.in for the list of State Open Universities. Most of them offer BA, but the option of finance at the under graduate level in arts would be rare. Also, if you wish to study Finance, you would be better off doing either BBA or BCom. However, only a post graduate programme in finance would be meaningful. Hence, you should track distance education programmes to find out what is available and which choice would suit you more. Any distance education in finance without relevant work experience would not help you to get placed.

arrow icon I want to do m.phil(english) in distance mode, will I be elligible for direct interview of college service commissions without net/set? I am confussed regarding circular( m.phil Tamil Nadu)on UGC webpage. Can I opt universities other than TN ? Please help me

It would be advisable to talk to the authorities at the College Service Commission directly rather than take others’ views and opinions on it. The concerned authorities would be the best people to interpret the rules and notifications since you have a clear goal for your academic plans.

arrow icon i have completed my post graduation this year in commerce so i want to know that how can i continue my phd apart from qualifying the net and what will the fees for that i also want to know the time duration in which i can complete my phd

You can directly approach the university for its admission formalities for a PhD. Each university sets certain minimum standards and selection criteria. Fees would also differ, and the duration of the PhD would actually depend upon the student, the guide and the nature of topic identified for the PhD thesis. A PhD could take four years or more.

arrow icon I am aspiring to registre for my M.phil.in computer Science degree in one university which offers this course through distance mode.but I have come to know that m.phil courses through distance mode are no longer recognised by UGC since 2006 session. In this regard I have tried to contact UGC and also to the university but to no avail and also there are no clear cut guidelines. If I go to the university and ask this question, they say that their course is recognised by DEC and hence by UGC. I dont want to waste another session.please help me out.

Why consider something under doubt. If you can get the confirmation, well and good. Otherwise, it would be much better either to postpone the decision to join till you get a clarification or you could consider admission to a full time programme, which would be far more meaningful and better accepted from the point of view of job or for admission to a PhD.
