i am b.com final year student, i am very much confused about my career. i have interest in media industry as well as in financial sector (stock broking). i plan to do a short term course on stock market operation but i will love to be an radio jockey. actually i am very much confused about my carrier as i belong to a middle class family so i cant afford to pay the high course fess of courses pertaining to media industry. please suggest what shall i do.

For being a radio jockey you need not to do any course rather you should have a natural talent that include a good voice quality, pronunciation, diction and modulation and also to be lively and be able to chat with the listeners on any topic and be interesting. You can go for auditions in Local FM/AIR station by sending in your resume on plain paper. As far as stock broking is concerned you may contact local sub-brokers to get into the business. It is not expensive but a lot depends on your knowledge on the subject and personal interest. -Hena Naqvi 07/08/09

I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT MASS COMMUNICATION. ADMISSION TO THE MASS COMMUNICATION. ELIGIBILITY. PLACEMENT. BEST INSTITUTE FOR MASS COMMUNICATION. PAY PACKAGE AFTER DOING THIS COURSE IN PRIVATE INDUSTRIES AND AS WELL IN GOVT.

Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi (www.iimc.gov.in), Asian College of Journalism, Chennai (www.asianmedia.org.in), University of Mumbai (www.mcjmumbai.org), Times School of Journalism ( www.tcms.in) , SNDT Women’s University (http://sndt.digitaluniversity.ac) ,Sophia College (www.sophiacampus.com), Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s S P College of Communication & Management, New Delhi (www.bvbdelhi.org), Manipal Institute of Communications (www.manipal.edu), Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism, Bhopal (www.mcu.ac.in), A J K Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia(http://www.jmi.nic.in) ,Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (www.bhu.ac.in) , and The Manorama School of Communication, Kottayam (www.manoramajschool.com) are among the prominent mass communication training institutions. Selection to postgraduate programmes usually comprises a written test and interview. The written test usually had both objective and conventional (short answers, composition, précis) questions. The objective is to test writing skills, capacity for self expression, editing, vocabulary, general awareness including current affairs and related abilities. There may be a test on media analysis and assessment of media related work (portfolio). Journalism applicants for some institutions may have to undergo a test in Desk Top Publishing (DTP) in English in MS Word or PageMaker. A syllabus is hardly ever prescribed and there is no fixed format, so the candidate’s individuality matters. Examples and listings are indicative Mass communication courses can lead to jobs in print (newspapers, magazines, and other print publications), online journalism, or radio and television journalism, or in advertising or public relations, depending upon the available openings at that point of time, and based on the suitability of the aptitude and skills you possess. Pay packages depend upon the employer, and could vary with individual abilities in the private sector and location, but would be quite standard in the government. The recruitment notification would mention the pay scale in the government or public sector undertakings. 07/08/2009

Hello sir/madam i m science student group-b. And want to do mass communication in journalism. So what to do after completion of HSC to take admission in it & some details also about it. Plz guide me.

You can seek admission to such under graduate programmes after class 12th with science, group b, but there is no standard process for all universities offering such programmes. For example, admission to the bachelor’s degree in mass communication and journalism or equivalent under Delhi University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi, Symbiosis International University, etc is based on performance in the entrance examination, of which the last two universities conduct national level tests. However, admission to the Bachelor of Mass Media under University of Mumbai is based on class 12th board aggregates. Indicative examples. The admission notification appears in advance. You may check the website www.set-test.org for details of the test for admission to Symbiosis International University, Pune and www.ipu.ac.in for the entrance test schedule for admission to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Delhi.(31.12.2008)

sir i m m.a. in pol.sc.& philosophy now i m doing my m.sc. in mass commun., & journalism &advertising after future i want to do the phd. prog. in journalism &mass comm. from open or dist.learning plz send me the list of these types of institutes &what is the career oppoutunities for me this sector

Your first priority after doing this course would be to get a job in print, radio, television, advertising or in public/ press relations. Only then should you consider whether you want to pursue higher degrees, and whether you would be able to do justice to a distance learning programme because jobs in your field are very demanding and timings are irregular and long. IGNOU (www.ignou.ac.in) and other Open Universities as also various universities offering distance learning programmes keep advertising their admission schedule in the prominent dailies. Pick up leads from there when you are in a position to take on the PhD. Right now start reviewing job options and finish off the programme with an excellent performance. Try to get as much practical experience as possible.(08.12.2008)

I have done my graduation in English from Delhi University and am doing Masters in Political Science from the same. Is my educational qualification strong enough to fetch me a job in print journalism? Is it necessary to have a degree in jounalism to become a print journalist?

It is not at all necessary to have a journalism degree to become a journalist. Many of the famous journalist did not have. What is required is a nose for news, curiousity, flair of writing and abitlity to analyse the facts. If you have them, go ahead. However, for a formal degree/diploma you can contact Indian Institute of Mass communication (www.iimc.nic.in), Delhi University (www.du.ac.in) or IGNOU (www.ignou.ac.in) (for correspondence course). sir, i have done PG in telugu literature and also completed diploma in web designing. still i have been working as a sub editor in leading telugu news paper. i have 6 years ex in journalism. now iam loking for learn pg diploma courses like mass communication like that. which is the better course for me. which course generated somany opprtunities. pl suggest. thank you regards adi, andrapradesh

Since you have already completed six years in the capacity as a sub-editor, it would perhaps seem logical to add a post graduation qualification in mass communications (IIMC, Delhi may be contacted for a regular or Distance Education course). You should also take advantage of your course in the web-designing by associating your self with the uploading of the content of your newspaper on the web (in case it is having a web edition).

What is the scope of BA (JOURNALISM) in Bangalore what is the procedure\eligibility for selection of journalist or in any news channel for the post of reporting etc.

The scope of employment would depend upon your abilities and personality skills. The different news channels may be approached directly, or you may track vacancies on the basis of local recruitment advertisements and postings on the notice board of your college. They would conduct their own selection process which could involve written exercises, personal interview and screen test/ equivalent.
