Yoga has emerged as a holistic and alternative medical care across the globe. The growing number of yoga coaching classes and studios around us is a testimony to this trend. Yoga as a natural way to keep oneself fit and healthy, is a gift of the Indian civilisation to the world. It also helps in improving mental health. Asanas (physical exercises) and Pranayam (breathing exercise) are essential components of Yoga. Yogic practice is helpful in the management of severe diseases, including cancer, bronchial asthma, colitis, peptic and ulcer. It also helps control physiological variables such as blood pressure, lipids, respiration, heart rate, and metabolic rate to improve overall exercise capacity. Yoga has emerged as a viable therapy to prevent and cure several ailments. A recent survey has claimed that over 10% of American population practice yoga and there are around 6,000 yoga studios in the US. About 300 million people practice yoga worldwide. About 14.3 million people in India practised yoga in 2013, up from 6.3 million in 2001. The yoga market is now 80 billion dollar globally. In India, the value of wellness industry has crossed Rs 85,000 crore. Yoga industry in the US is expected to become a $11.5 billion industry by 2020. The rising popularity of this therapy, to augment mental, physical emotional and also spiritual well-being, has made it a lucrative field for all those who want to make a career in Yoga. There are numerous jobs options available both in the government as well as the private sectors for the Yoga professionals. The Union as well as the State governments are hiring such professionals for their various organizations. After pursuing different courses in Yoga, following jobs may be taken up:

Courses in Yoga

There are numerous courses available for students who want to make their career in this field.

Certificate Course in Yoga: It is a short term course ranging from a month long course to a 1-year course. The eligibility for this course is 10+2 from any recognised school or its equivalent exam. There is usually no age limit for this course.
Bachelor Courses: Bachelor degree is offered in various streams like Yogic Sciences and Yoga Philosophy. Duration of these courses is three years and eligibility is 10+2 from any stream securing minimum 45% marks.
Under Graduate Diploma: It is a one year duration course with six months internship with the eligibility of graduate from any stream with a certificate in Yoga.
Post Graduate Diploma: It is a one year duration course with the eligibility of graduation with any stream from any recognized university.
Master Courses in Yoga: It is a two year duration course with the eligibility of minimum graduation from any stream.
Yoga Teachers' Training Courses: It is usually one month duration course with eligibility of certificate, diploma or graduation in yoga with two years teaching experience in yoga.

The increased focus on Yoga by the Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi and his government has improved job opportunities in Yoga training. The initiative like 'International Yoga Day' has brought the enhanced focus on Yoga at a global level. The demand for yoga teachers has grown exponentially, and a recent study by ASSOCHAM reveals that the demand for trainers is set to grow by 30-35 per cent in the couple of years. Though India has emerged as one of the biggest Yoga teachers' exporters in the world; however, the country itself is facing a shortage of about 3 lakh yoga instructors as against the requirement of over 5 lakh yoga practitioners. So, a bright future awaits for all those who want to pursue their career in Yoga.
