I am pursuing Masters in Geology at the M. S. University of Baroda. Please tell me about the prospects of this subject in India and in the world.

Geologists work as exploration geologists in petroleum, oil and natural gas companies, or as well site geologists, mine geologists, quarry managers, mineral surveyors, geological mappers or as geophysicists.
GSI and Central Ground Water Board recruit geologists on the basis of the Geologists' Examination conducted by the UPSC. Postgraduates in geology, marine geology, mineral exploration, hydrology or Associates in Applied Geology from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad are eligible to apply. The Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration & Research, Hyderabad (D/o Atomic Energy, GoI) recruits Scientific Officers (MSc/MTech Geology & Geophysics) through an entrance exam for field posting and lab work at its centres all over the country. Those with MSc/MTech or equivalent degree in Geology/Appl Geology/Appl Geochemistry can apply. Other organisations where geologists are placed are the Indian Bureau of Mines, Coal India Ltd, National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad, Centre for Earth Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, Mineral Exploration Corporation Ltd, National Institute of Hydrology, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Hindustan Zinc Ltd, Neyveli Lignite Corporation, Aluminium Corporation, Dept. of Atomic Energy, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun, cement companies and mining exploration companies like BHP Billiton Minerals Exploration (www.bhpbilliton.com), Central Water Board. Geophysical instrumentation is another promising area to look at. So is analysis and monitoring of computerised seismic data and information. You can also go in for further specialisation i.e. M Sc Tech (Earth Sc) in Applied Geology/Geophysics after BSc in Geology which can be pursued at 70-odd universities in the country including the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad and IIT Roorkee or B Sc (Appl Geol) from Anna University (Chennai). Remote Sensing is yet another area of specialisation you could consider at the postgraduate level. Knowledge of GIS, a highly sophisticated computer-based tool for capturing, managing, manipulating, analysing models and displays of spatially referenced data for solving complex planning and management problems is an asset.
