India is already home to over 420 million online gamers, making it the second-largest gaming population globally, right after China. With a projected five-year growth rate of 17.2%, India is rapidly becoming a global gaming superpower.
Despite this impressive expansion, the Indian gaming industry still faces a significant challenge: the lack of a fully developed publishing ecosystem. While India boasts a vibrant community of game developers, there is a scarcity of domestic publishers equipped with the resources to help developers scale their games. In contrast to more mature markets like the U.S. and China, where domestic publishers capture a substantial portion of the market, Indian publishers only accounted for 6% of local consumer spending in 2022, a sharp decline from 11% in 2020. This gap has limited the industry's ability to cater to a broad spectrum of gaming genres, with many developers focusing on hyper-casual and casual games instead of exploring mid-core or hardcore genres.
However, this presents an enormous opportunity for growth. As the gaming market matures, the need for specialised Indian game publishers becomes increasingly urgent. These publishers could play a critical role by offering financial backing, forging strategic partnerships, and facilitating international distribution for Indian-developed games. Gaming, as a subset of AVGC, is witnessing explosive growth, driven by an increasing appetite for digital entertainment and the rapid adoption of mobile gaming platforms. The NCoE will create an ecosystem that facilitates the development of both hyper-casual and mid-core games, moving beyond the casual gaming market that has traditionally dominated India's gaming landscape.
The creation of specialised job roles within gaming and related industries such as VFX, animation, and comics will also provide new career pathways for India's youth. This will further enhance India's global competitiveness, with more homegrown games, comics, and animations reaching international markets.
