India in Paris Olympics 2024
(August 3-8, 2024)
In the Paris Olympics 2024, the largest ever Indian contingent of 117 athletes including 70 men and 47 women are competing in 69 events across 16 sports with a total of 95 medals at stake.
India had returned with a record haul of seven medals including one gold from Tokyo 2020 and is striving to better the count at Paris 2024.
ARCHERY
India has fielded a full six-member Archery squad including three men and three women. While Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai are making their fourth Olympic appearance, Pravin Jadhav is making his second and Dhiraj Bommadevara, Bhajan Kaur and Ankita Bhakat are first timers.
ATHLETICS
A 29-member-strong Indian Athletics team including ace Javelin thrower and defending Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra is participating in the track and field events that began on August 1. The team includes Javelin throwers Kishore Jena and Annu Rani, hurdler Jyothi Yarraji, long jumper Jeswin Aldrin, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel and Abdulla Aboobacker, Shotput athletes Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Abha Khatua, steeplechasers Avinash Sable and Parul Chaudhary, race- walkers Akshdeep Singh, Paramjeet Singh Bisht, Vikash Singh and Suraj Panwar and also triple jumper and middle-distance runner Ankita Dhyani.
Women's 100 metre finals is being held on August 3 while Men's 100 metre finals on August 4. Avinash Sable will look to make it to 3000 metre steeplechase finals on August 5. Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena will appear in Javelin throw qualification round on August 6 while Neeraj's time to defend his title will come on August 8.
BADMINTON
Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu is representing India in Badminton events being held from July 27 to August 5. Besides her, Ashwini Ponnappa, Tanisha Crasto, HS Prannoy, Lakshya Sen, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are leading the Indian challenge.
Women's singles quarter-finals, women's doubles bronze medal match and women's doubles final is being held on August 3. Women's and men's singles semi-finals, men's doubles bronze medal and men's doubles final is scheduled for August 4. The big day being August 5 for women's singles bronze medal, women's singles final, men's singles bronze medal and men's singles final.
HOCKEY
Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh has said that the team wants to win a medal in the Paris Olympics 2024 as a tribute to its goalkeeper PR Sreejesh who has been one of India's best goalkeepers and has announced his retirement after the Paris games. The 36-year-old Sreejesh had played a crucial role in India's bronze medal win at Tokyo.
Men's quarterfinals is being held on August 4 and semifinals on August 6 while women's quarterfinals is taking place on August 5 and semifinals on August 7. Men's bronze medal match and final is being played on August 8 while women's bronze medal match and final on August 9.
SHOOTING
A shooting squad of 21 members is India's second-largest contingent to any sport at Paris 2024. This is the biggest Indian contingent fielded at any Games, surpassing the 15 from Tokyo 2020. This is also the first time that Indian shooters have secured a quota in every Olympic shooting category.
Skeet women's final is being held on August 4. Anish Bhanwal and Vijayveer Sidhu are taking part in men's 25 metre rapidfire and pistol qualification events on this day. Anjum Moudgil and Sift Kaur Samra are participating in women's 50 metre rifle 3 positions while Rhythm Sangwan and Manu Bhaker in women's 10 metre air pistol individual and mixed team events. The finals are being held on August 5.
BOXING
Tokyo bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain and two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen who is making her Olympic debut in Paris, are India's medal hopes. The conquest ends on August 10.
TABLE TENNIS
Men's and Women's team matches kicks off on August 5. India's medal hope and World No. 25, Sreeja Akula is taking part in both, individual and team events.
TENNIS
The oldest player in the country's Olympic squad, Rohan Bopanna, 44 and Sriram Balaji are playing the men's doubles. Sumit Nagal is taking part in men's singles.
WEIGHTLIFTING
Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Mirabai Chanu's women's 49kg competition is slated for August 7.
WRESTLING
Vinesh Phogat's quest for the Olympic medal begins on August 6. Under-20 world champion Antim Panghal makes her Olympic debut on August 6. The women's finals are slated for August 7. Aman Sehrawat is India's sole male representative in 57kg freestyle.
SWIMMING
Srihari Nataraj is representing India in men's 100 metre Backstroke and Dhinidhi Desinghu in women's 200 metre freestyle.
SAILING
High hopes are pitched on Vishnu Saravanan who became the first Indian to win a sailing quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Nethra Kumanan whose dinghy sets off in the first two of 10 races. She also won Gold at the Asian Championship in 2022.
GOLF
Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar hit the course in round 1 on August 7. Women's rounds end on August 10.
