From Cockpit to Innovation:

Revolutionising India's Defence Technology

Dr. Nimish Kapoor

In an era where technological advancements are critical to national security, India is undergoing a transformative shift in its defence landscape. The growing need for indigenous solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by the armed forces has sparked innovation and entrepreneurship. A new generation of startups is emerging, dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies such as surveillance drones and advanced infrared systems, all aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and self-reliance.

A Vision for Homegrown Defence Solutions

Deftech & GreenIndia Pvt Ltd (DGPL) is a prime example of this revolution in India's defence sector. Founded five years ago by Wing Commander Manish Choudhary (Retd.), a seasoned fighter pilot with over 1,800 flying hours, DGPL emerged from a profound realisation: the Indian Armed Forces deserve home-grown, state-of-the-art solutions to meet their unique operational challenges. The startup's mission is to bridge the gap between military needs and industry capabilities.

By prioritising self-reliance and advanced technology, DGPL is focused on developing innovative solutions such as surveillance drones, sustainable fuel options, and the identification of friendly forces in hostile terrain. The goal is to empower the military with the necessary tools to safeguard the nation and maintain peace and security.

From Cockpit to Startup: The Journey Begins

The story of DGPL began during Wing Commander Choudhary's tenure in the Indian Air Force, specifically in the western sector. There was a pressing requirement to deploy Infrared Night Vision Goggles (IR NVG) and Helipad Lights for forward helipads, enabling pilots to operate in complete darkness. However, when Wing Commander Choudhary searched the market for suitable procurement options, he found no Indian solutions. The available Western products were prohibitively expensive, and the only alternative was a Chinese product. This frustration led him to ask, "Why can't we make these things in India?"

That question was the catalyst for DGPL's creation. Today, DGPL stands as one of India's largest producers of tactical infrared products.

Inspiration from the Israeli Model

Wing Commander Choudhary's vision was also influenced by his visit to Israel during his service, where he observed how veterans of the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) were involved in designing and developing solutions for their military. This collaboration between military personnel and industry professionals allowed the IDF to approach defence challenges with a tactical mindset. He wanted to apply his own experience as a fighter pilot and AWACS Mission Commander to develop solutions for the Indian Armed Forces.

Focused Innovation in Defence and Eco-Friendly Practices

DGPL operates in two primary verticals: defence technology and eco-friendly practices. In defence technology, the startup addresses critical issues such as enhancing surveillance capabilities and modernising operational standards. By innovating in infrared technology and contributing to India's self-reliance in defence, DGPL is poised to revolutionise military operations while advancing the nation's goal of becoming a global defence equipment exporter.

The startup's mission aligns closely with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, emphasising the importance of indigenous solutions in safeguarding national security.

Bridging Gaps in Defence Technology

DGPL was founded to be "Innovators for Defence," focusing on solving the problems faced by the Indian Armed Forces. "We try to understand the needs of the Indian Defence Forces, match them with industry capabilities, and propose the most optimal solutions. If the solution is not available, we innovate to meet the user's requirements," said Wing Commander Choudhary.

The company's Deftech vertical focuses on filling the gap between the user's needs and the products delivered by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Through inhouse R&D, DGPL develops products and technology that empower soldiers to effectively leverage their strengths on the battlefield. Additionally, the GreenIndia vertical focuses on regenerative techniques for ecosystems, shifting from modern to more traditional methods like bioinsect control, which serves as a non-toxic alternative to chemical insecticides.

Innovations and Technologies Developed

DGPL is a global leader in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology and holds a dominant market position in India's Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) sector, commanding a defence market share of approximately 50% in fiscal 2022. The startup's UAVs are equipped with industry-leading specifications, comparable to those of other established global players in the UAV industry. "Our drones have an ergonomic design and have been tested in extreme weather conditions at high altitudes across India, from deserts to glaciers," explained Wing Commander Choudhary.

In addition to UAVs, DGPL specialises in infrared-based products, including IR-NVG Helipad Lights, IR-based IFF patches, and IR handheld and gun/helmet-mounted torches. These products have been supplied in large quantities to the Indian Army and Air Force, marking a significant achievement. DGPL also won an Innovation for Defence Excellence (IDEX) challenge, where they designed exclusive IR-based Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) patches for soldiers. These patches enhance situational awareness and improve the identification of friendly forces in various operational environments. For the Indian Navy, DGPL is upgrading the Heli Deck lights of a New Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) to Night Vision Goggles (NVG) lighting standards.

Collaborations for Enhanced Capabilities

Tailored solutions like the infrared-based helipad lights for night operations demonstrate how innovation can directly address the unique needs of the armed forces. DGPL has formed strategic collaborations with companies such as Addverb Technologies, Clearspan, Ottonomy IO Pvt. Ltd., and Future Industries to significantly enhance its technological capabilities.

Understanding Stakeholder Needs

Understanding the requirements of the Indian Armed Forces is no easy task, as Wing Commander Choudhary explains. However, his background as both the son of an infantry officer and as a fighter pilot has given him valuable insight into the nuances of military needs. "Once I understand the project scope, objectives, and deliverables, I identify the areas of the Armed Forces that will be impacted. We then engage with key stakeholders through meetings and surveys to gather their needs, expectations, and concerns," said Wing Commander Choudhary. This comprehensive approach helps the startup ensure that its solutions are tailored to meet the specific needs of its end users.

Overcoming Challenges in Funding

Despite its success, DGPL remains a self-funded company. Wing Commander Choudhary mentions that while efforts were made to raise capital through various government schemes, funding has often been minimal and difficult to secure without a government contract. The startup has raised funds from friends and family but acknowledges that the financial requirements for pure R&D are substantial. DGPL has been awarded the iDEX challenge grant by the Defence Innovation Organisation (DIO), but the company must make a matching contribution.

Future Plans and Vision

In just five years, DGPL has rapidly expanded its product line to include warehouse automation, robotic transportation, logistics solutions, infrared-based security solutions, and surveillance drones. The startup, originally focused on serving the Indian Armed Forces, now caters to various departments under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). DGPL's growth is a testament to its vision and to the Government of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The startup's goal is to contribute to the development of "Made in India" products and to position India as a global exporter of defence equipment, with a target of Rs. 35,000 crore in exports by 2025.
